OSRS Ironman Equipment Progression Guide — Bils Services

Ironman gear progression from starter kits to mid-game power: weapons, armor switches, money methods without the GE, and what to chase next.

Quick Take

Iron gear progression is a unlock tree, not a shopping list. Prioritise items that open multiple bosses and reduce death rates — dragon defender, fire cape, solid mid weapons — before rare flex greeds.

This guide is for iron accounts choosing the next gear grind. Bils Services has delivered hand-done OSRS work since 2018 — education first, optional help second.

Verify live numbers on the OSRS Wiki — prices, XP rates, and requirements move with updates.

Who This Guide Is For

  • Fresh irons leaving early game
  • Mids stuck between barrows and raids
  • GIMs coordinating shared upgrade order

The Restrictions That Shape Every Upgrade

Iron gear order looks strange from the outside until you write down what the mode actually forbids. Every entry below is the reason some upgrade a main buys in thirty seconds becomes a week of your account's life.

  • Restriction
    No trading with other players
    What it means for gear
Every item is either a drop, a craft or a shop purchase. Bonds and a couple of quest items are the only exceptions
  • Restriction
    No Grand Exchange
    What it means for gear
You cannot buy or sell. Bonds are purchasable through an Ironman-only interface, and not sellable
  • Restriction
    No assisted kills
    What it means for gear
If another player damages a monster, you get no loot from it at all — even zero damage from them is enough on some monsters
  • Restriction
    No goaded monsters
    What it means for gear
A monster pulled with a goading potion drops nothing for you
  • Restriction
No picking loot off the ground
    What it means for gear
Items another player leaves are not yours to take, and loot keys cannot be collected
  • Restriction
    No Nightmare Zone group play
    What it means for gear
Its resource rewards are off the table, apart from scrolls of redirection

The practical consequence is that upgrade priority follows drop reliability rather than item strength. An item from a boss you can kill a hundred times is a plan. An item behind a rate you might not see this year is a hope, and it should not be blocking the rest of your account.

Hardcore accounts carry one more constraint. An unsafe death converts you to a standard Ironman, so on a hardcore the correct next upgrade is often the defensive one rather than the damage one. Minigame deaths are safe, and the OSRS Wiki keeps the current list of which activities count.

Progression Priorities

Default iron power order (flex for your goals):

  • Reliable mid weapons you can obtain without insane RNG
  • Dragon defender / equivalent off-hand upgrades
  • Fire cape as a combat identity spike
  • Barrows / mid armour that covers multiple styles
  • Then specialised grinders (CG, raids, etc.) with eyes open

If an item only looks good in screenshots, it waits.

Practical Step-By-Step Plan

How to choose the next grind:

  1. List content you can already attempt safely.
  2. Mark which missing item would improve that content most.
  3. Estimate average time-to-item honestly (wiki + your hours).
  4. Do a shorter unlock if two options are close in power.
  5. Bank supplies before long slayer/boss grinds.
  6. Reassess after each major drop — plans should move.

Avoiding Iron Trap Grinds

Some items are traps early: ultra-rare weapons before you have food/prayer pipelines, or fashion armour before defence where you die. Build the account that can farm — then farm the flex.

  • Food / potion supply chain before greedy PvM
  • Quest unlocks that multiply training options
  • Slayer as a structured gear + money engine

Raids Readiness vs Collection Log

You can enter entry-level raids before perfect gear if skills and team patience exist. Collection log completion is a different hobby — do not confuse it with progression.

Common Mistakes

  • Chasing one pet for months mid-progression
  • Ignoring defenders / fire cape for shiny mid weapons
  • Entering raids with no supply pipeline
  • Copying main GE loadouts 1:1

Iron progress is logistics plus combat — not drop luck alone.

When Paid Help Makes Sense (Optional)

Some iron blockers are pure time sinks you hate. Ironman services can help with defined skill/quest ranges — never with shady account-risk shortcuts.

FAQ

Is Corrupted Gauntlet mandatory?

It is a strong mid/late power path for many irons, not a moral requirement. Choose based on enjoyment and alternatives.

When do I start raids?

When you can survive learning and restock supplies. See raids overview.

Bottom Line

Iron gear is a sequence of doors — open the ones that lead to more doors.

Power first. Flex later. Supplies always.
