OSRS Shades of Mort'ton Guide: Temple, Sacred Oil, Cremation & Keys — Bils Services

Practical Shades of Mort'ton strategies for temple repair, sacred oil, shade cremation, key farming, and Crafting/Prayer/Firemaking goals—grounded in supplies, Sanctity, and efficient loops.

The Short Answer

Shades of Mort'ton is a post-quest minigame built around three linked activities: repairing the temple (Crafting XP and Sanctity), sanctifying olive oil into sacred oil, and cremating shade remains for Prayer/Firemaking XP plus shade keys. Finish the Shades of Mort'ton quest first. Use Serum 208 on Razmire Keelgan once so his general store and builders' supplies stay unlocked permanently—those shops cover almost everything you need on-site.

Pick one primary goal before you bank-stand. Sacred oil profit is mostly temple repair + sanctify. Prayer/Firemaking is cremation-focused (buy oil if you want speed). Chest uniques need the right remains for the key metal you want, then consistent chest runs. The full make-oil → pyre → cremate → chest loop uses the fewest bought supplies but is the slowest path for any single goal.

  • Temple meters: shared Repair State, personal Resources, personal Sanctity (drains 1% per minute; resets to 0% on logout).
  • Sanctify olive oil from 10% Sanctity (0.9% per dose / 3.6% per 4-dose vial); Serum 207 → 208 needs 20% and costs 5% per dose.
  • Cremation rewards: coins ~21% of the time, otherwise a shade key. Keys/coins on the pedestal despawn after 5 minutes (other players cannot take them).
  • Official mass world mentioned in strategies: World 377, useful if lower level and shades are aggressive.

What the Minigame Actually Is

Think of Mort'ton as a small resource loop, not a single skilling click. Building feeds Sanctity. Sanctity turns olive oil into sacred oil (and can upgrade Serum 207 to 208). Sacred oil plus logs make pyre logs for cremating remains. Cremation feeds Prayer and Firemaking XP and produces keys that open catacomb chests for loot, locks, and uniques.

You do not have to do every step every trip. Many efficient accounts specialise: oil-only for GP/Crafting, cremate-only for Prayer, or one key tier for a target unique. That specialisation is usually better than forcing a full loop when your goal is narrow.

The three meters (read these first)

  • Repair State — temple condition shared by everyone nearby; shades damage walls and this drops over time.
  • Resources — your personal building stock; spent when you repair.
  • Sanctity — your personal holy power for sanctifying oil/serum; starts at 0%, drains 1% per minute, and clears on logout.

Because Sanctity decays and does not survive logout, spend it in batches. Do not stockpile a huge Sanctity bar and walk away—sanctify a full oil inventory when you have enough, then rebuild.

Requirements, Unlock, and First-Trip Prep

  1. Complete the Shades of Mort'ton quest before treating this as a training or money method.
  2. Use one dose of Serum 208 on Razmire Keelgan to permanently unlock his general store and builders' supplies.
  3. Decide your focus: temple/oil, cremation XP, or keys/chests—buy supplies for that focus only.
  4. If you own coffin upgrades from Dampe locks, bring the coffin so each cremation trip carries more remains.

Supplies by activity

What to bring depending on your focus
  • Focus
    Temple building (Crafting + Sanctity)
    Core items
Flamtaer hammer (preferred), Flamtaer bracelet, timber/limestone/swamp paste or Flamtaer bag
    Notes
Normal or imcando hammer works; Flamtaer is much faster
  • Focus
    Sacred oil
    Core items
    Olive oil in 4-dose vials
    Notes
4-doses save inventory and map cleanly to Sanctity cost
  • Focus
    Cremation
    Core items
Shade remains, suitable logs, sacred oil, tinderbox, coffin if owned
    Notes
Minimum pyre log tier depends on shade type

Resources meter materials

Each of the sets below adds 5% to your personal Resources meter:

Materials per 5% Resources
  • Material
    Timber beam or plank

Seb's Shipyard Supplies (often cheapest), catacomb chests, Afflicted gifts, or swamp tar + pot of flour

Sanctity: How You Gain It and What It Costs

Sanctity is the bottleneck for oil makers and anyone crafting Serum 208 on-site. Gain it mainly by repairing the temple, with a smaller top-up from killing Loar Shades near the temple.

  • Repairing: roughly 5% Sanctity per 1% Resources spent—much faster with a Flamtaer bracelet equipped.
  • Loar Shade kills near the temple: 2% Sanctity per kill.
  • Drain: 1% Sanctity per minute while you play; logout resets Sanctity to 0%.
Sanctify actions and Sanctity costs
  • Action
Sanctify olive oil → sacred oil
    Minimum Sanctity
    10%
    Cost
    0.9% per dose (3.6% per 4-dose vial)
  • Action
    Sanctify Serum 207 → Serum 208
    Minimum Sanctity
    20%
    Cost
    5% per dose

Max sacred oil per hour (practical loop)

  1. Equip Flamtaer bracelet + Flamtaer hammer; bring Flamtaer bag if owned.
  2. Arrive with olive oil already decanted to 4-dose vials.
  3. Repair until Sanctity covers your full oil inventory.
  4. Sanctify everything at the sacred fire, then return to repairing.
  5. Spend Sanctity regularly—do not hoard it while it ticks down.

Temple repair with a Flamtaer hammer is cited around 12 Crafting experience per second. It is one of the cheaper Crafting approaches, but slow compared with mainstream Crafting methods—use it when you also want oil or Sanctity, not as a pure XP race. For broader training options, see Skills and our skill training service overview.

Shade Tiers, Pyre Logs, and Cremation Basics

Each shade tier drops its own remains and needs a minimum pyre log tier. Higher remains generally mean better keys and more Prayer XP. Firemaking XP tracks the log, not the remains—so FM trainers should burn the highest-XP valid log they are willing to fund, while Prayer trainers usually want the cheapest valid log.

Key metal decides which doors/chests you can open. Key colour affects reward quality (worse → better colour scale; purple is called out as especially strong for valuable loot and clue chance). Always keep at least one key of the highest tier you can access—ideally banked—because keys are consumed on chests. Losing your last high-tier key means farming back up from lower remains.

Cremation inventory rhythm

  • Batch same-location work: sanctify a full oil invent at the temple, then cremate a full remains load at the pyres in one visit.
  • For pyre making, one approach is parking a log and sacred oil in the bottom-right inventory slots, using them on each other every tick while holding spacebar; or use make-all for a calmer pace.
  • You can cremate several remains before looting the pedestal, as long as you stay inside the 5-minute despawn window.

Coffin storage upgrades

Upgrading the broken coffin from Dampe with locks found in chests increases how many remains you carry per trip. Storage steps listed in strategies: 3 → 8 → 14 → 20 → 28. Locks match chest tier (bronze locks from bronze chests, steel from steel, and so on).

Keys, Chests, and What to Burn for Each Metal

Each cremated remains roll is about 21% coins and otherwise a key. Except for Loar and Urium, shades can produce either a lower-metal key in a better colour or a higher-metal key in a worse colour. That split is why the “fastest key metal” remains are not always the highest shade tier.

Coin ranges and key split chances by remains

Fastest source per key metal

  • Bronze — Loar remains
  • Steel — Phrin remains
  • Black — Riyl remains (66.5% vs 28.2% black-line from Asyn)
  • Silver — Fiyr remains (63.4% vs 50.8% from Asyn)
  • Gold — Urium remains

Practical examples from the same logic: farm black chests by burning Riyl, not Asyn; farm silver chests by burning Fiyr, not Asyn. Colour still matters—lower-metal keys in strong colours (for example purple steel keys from Riyl) can be worth opening for loot and clues even when you are not pushing metal tier.

Ironman note on Fiyr remains

Ironmen can obtain Fiyr remains without silver keys by running Temple Trekking hard routes from Burgh de Rott on route three. Mort'ton encounters often include Fiyr Shades; if not, teleport back with Morytania legs 3 or better and retry.

Prayer, Firemaking, and Diary Multipliers

Prayer XP depends mostly on remains type and only slightly on log tier. Example given in strategies: Riyl remains give 61 Prayer XP with willow pyre logs versus 63 with rosewood pyre logs. Because the gap is small, Prayer-focused accounts usually burn the cheapest log that can cremate that remains tier.

Morytania Hard Diary increases Prayer XP from cremation by 50%. Firemaking XP depends on the log, and Morytania Elite Diary increases Firemaking XP from cremation by 50%. For cost-per-XP on specific pyre logs, check the pyre log table on the main Shades of Mort'ton wiki page—those live prices change and should not be guessed from memory.

If your account goal is pure Prayer or Firemaking levels rather than Mort'ton loot, compare this method against other skilling options first. Minigames like Wintertodt are often simpler FM routes; Mort'ton shines when you also want sacred oil, keys, or Morytania progression.

Choose a Strategy Path

1) Sacred oil / Crafting-leaning (simplest money loop)

Repair the temple and sanctify olive oil without cremating. Sell sacred oil and bank Crafting XP. This is the most straightforward play pattern and pairs cleanly with Flamtaer gear. Strategies point to the wiki money-making guide for Making sacred oil for current profit rates—check live GE prices before treating it as a main GP method.

2) Cremation-only Prayer (buy oil to save time)

Buy sacred oil from the Grand Exchange, make pyre logs, and only cremate. Skip chests if you do not care about keys. Use cheapest valid logs for Prayer, or higher logs if Firemaking is the real goal.

3) Key/unique focus

Burn the remains that produce your target key metal most often, then open that chest tier consistently. Keep a spare top-tier key banked. Upgrade coffin storage as locks drop so trips stay long.

4) Full self-sufficient loop

Make oil, make pyre logs, cremate, open chests. You get mixed Crafting, Firemaking, and Prayer XP plus chest loot while buying fewer finished supplies. It is the slowest route for any single metric, but efficient for iron-leaning or low-GE play.

Combat Level, Worlds, and Shade Management While Building

A combat level of at least 81 is recommended so Loar Shades do not attack you during temple repairs. Below that, strategies suggest playing on the official World 377 so aggression is spread across many players, or luring a shade along the path toward Mort Myre Swamp until it turns back.

Plan banking around batched steps. Sanctify a full oil inventory before leaving the temple area. Cremate a full remains load in one pyre visit. Pedestal loot can wait until several cremations finish, but respect the 5-minute despawn.

Practical Checklist (Before You Teleport)

  1. Quest done; Razmire unlocked with Serum 208 (once is enough for permanent shops).
  2. Goal chosen: oil, XP, keys, or full loop.
  3. Flamtaer hammer + bracelet equipped for any serious temple work; bag if owned.
  4. Olive oil decanted to 4-dose if sanctifying.
  5. Remains + correct minimum (or better) logs + sacred oil + tinderbox if cremating.
  6. Coffin loaded if you have upgrades; spare highest-tier key sitting in the bank.
  7. Combat 81+ or a plan for Loar aggression (World 377 / lure).
  8. Know your Sanctity math: 3.6% per 4-dose oil vial; do not logout on a full Sanctity bar you still need.

FAQ

Do I have to cremate to make money from Shades of Mort'ton?

No. Repairing the temple and sanctifying olive oil into sacred oil is the straightforward money-oriented loop. Cremation adds XP and keys but is optional for oil sellers.

Why did my Sanctity disappear?

Sanctity drains 1% per minute and resets to 0% when you log out. Spend it in batches at the sacred fire.

Which remains should I burn for black or silver keys?

For black keys, Riyl remains are the efficient farm (66.5% high-metal black line) compared with Asyn’s 28.2% low-metal black line. For silver, Fiyr remains (63.4%) beat Asyn’s 50.8% silver line.

Should Prayer trainers always use the best pyre log?

Usually no. Prayer XP is mostly from remains; log tier only changes it slightly (example: Riyl 61 XP on willow pyres vs 63 on rosewood). Cheapest valid log is the default Prayer choice unless you also want Firemaking XP.

What combat level do I need to build in peace?

81+ is recommended so Loar Shades stop attacking while you build. Lower levels can use World 377 or lure shades away.

Can other players steal my cremation loot?

Keys and coins left on the pedestal despawn after 5 minutes, and other players cannot take them. Still loot before the timer if you are chaining many cremations.

Is temple repair good Crafting XP?

It is cheap and steady—about 12 Crafting XP per second with a Flamtaer hammer—but slow versus dedicated Crafting methods. Treat it as Crafting-with-benefits when you need Sanctity or oil.

Bottom Line

Shades of Mort'ton rewards clear goals. Unlock Razmire, bring Flamtaer tools for any temple work, and treat Sanctity like a perishable resource. Make oil when you want a simple Crafting/GP loop; cremate on cheap valid logs for Prayer or expensive valid logs for Firemaking; burn the remains that actually produce your key metal when hunting chests. Keep a spare top-tier key banked, respect pedestal timers, and verify live chest uniques and pyre cost-per-XP on the OSRS Wiki before long grinds.

Run the checklist once, batch your temple and pyre steps, and the minigame stops feeling like three disconnected chores—and starts feeling like a controlled loop you can point at oil, XP, or keys on demand.
