OSRS Herb Run Guide: Passive Passive Farming GP

Perfect your OSRS herb runs: patch order, Farming Guild access, compost, magic secateurs, and a repeatable route for consistent passive GP.
Quick Take
Herb runs are the best “phone timer” money method in OSRS. Ultracompost + magic secateurs + a tight teleport route turn five minutes into steady GP — especially when you never skip the run.
This guide is for mains and irons who want low-effort daily GP. Bils Services has delivered hand-done OSRS work since 2018 — education first, optional help second.

Who This Guide Is For
- Busy players who can log in briefly through the day
- Accounts funding bonds / supplies passively
- Irons building potion stocks

Herb Run Essentials
If you skip these, you leave GP on the patch:
- Ultracompost (bottomless bucket QoL is huge)
- Magic secateurs
- Diary bonuses that affect yields / patches
- A written patch order you can run half-asleep
- Seed choice based on live GE margins, not vibes
Consistency beats “perfect herb” hopping every run.
Practical Step-By-Step Plan
Stand up a herb-run habit:
- Unlock the patches and teleports on your route.
- Buy compost + secateurs setup before scaling volume.
- Pick 1–2 herbs with healthy margins this week.
- Set timers aligned to patch growth — do not guess.
- Bank herbs; process or sell on a schedule.
- Recalculate seed choice when prices swing hard.

Startup Cost and the Only Real Risk
Herb runs are the rare money method with no combat risk at all. Nothing on the route can kill you and nothing is dropped on death. The risk is entirely economic: you pay for seeds and compost at the start of a cycle and find out what the patch gives you 80 minutes later.
| Risk factor | Reality |
|---|---|
| Death or PvP | None on the standard route. Herb patches sit in safe areas |
| Disease | The real threat. Herbs cannot be protected by paying a gardener the way allotments can |
| Price movement | Seeds and herbs are both traded, so a margin can close between planting and harvesting |
| Time | Herbs take roughly 80 minutes to finish growing, so a missed window costs a cycle rather than gold |

There are two answers to disease. The first is ultracompost, which cuts the chance of disease at each growth stage by 90% and raises the guaranteed minimum harvest above what standard or supercompost gives. The second is unlocking patches that cannot become diseased at all.

Two diary unlocks also raise yields directly: the Hard Kourend & Kebos Diary adds 5% extra yield at both the Hosidius patch and the second-tier Farming Guild patch.
On starting capital, buy in this order: enough seeds for one full lap of your route, ultracompost for every patch on it, and magic secateurs. After that the run funds itself. The bottomless compost bucket is a Hespori drop rather than a purchase, and it doubles every bucket of compost you pour into it, so it is a mid-term goal rather than a startup cost. If you have read the ash covered tome, the Fertile Soil spell with two volcanic ash replaces ultracompost entirely.
We do not publish a GP per run figure here. Herb and seed prices both move on the Grand Exchange, and your yield depends on which unlocks you hold — check live prices before committing a large seed order.
Route & Time Discipline
Your route should minimise teleports and bank friction. Write it once. Optimise monthly. The goal is a run you will still do on tired weeknights.
- Farming Guild integration when unlocked
- Tool leprechaun / seed vault organisation
- Never start a run mid-raid prep chaos — batch it

Ironman Herb Logic
Irons plant for potions needed, not GE meta. Still use compost and diaries — yield is account power. Contract/guild content can feed the loop.
Common Mistakes
- Skipping compost to “save money”
- Planting whatever looks cool without checking margins
- No timer → forgetting runs for days
- Letting herbs sit unnoted/unorganised forever
Herb GP is a habit. Broken habit, broken method.

FAQ
How many runs per day?
As many as your life allows — even 2–3 focused runs beat zero. Do not quit because you cannot do six.
Are herb runs dead content?
No. Margins move, but the structure remains one of the best passive loops in the game.
Bottom Line
Herb runs print quiet wealth for players who show up.
Compost. Secateurs. Timer. Repeat.
