The short version

30-second read
  • Tasks pay no Slayer points by default. Only the Slayer Point Mortifier pays: 5-15 on low tasks, 25-40 on basilisks, wyrms, kurask, aquanites and drakes.
  • Every assignment has a superior variant. Superiors still need Bigger and Badder (50 points), so unlock it before chasing the imbued heart or eternal gem.
  • Clear 50 of his tasks for three choices. The short low tasks are the quick way to reach 50 completions, after which he offers three options instead of two.
  • Stay on Duradel or Nieve for points. Duradel pays 15 points per task before streak bonuses, so XP and point training belong there.

Mortimer Requirements and Location

Mortimer is the Slayer Master in Wyrmscraig Cavern, added with Wyrmscraig on 29 July 2026, and he is now the highest-level master in the game. He gives tasks if you have 100 Combat and 70 Slayer, or any Combat level with 99 Slayer and the Slayer cape shown to him. You also have to reach him during Fallen From Grace, which needs 62 Sailing, 60 Crafting, 53 Mining, 47 Runecraft and Pandemonium to start.

Three things make him different. He only assigns monsters that have a superior variant. He lets you pick from two tasks, or three once you have done 50 of his. And his tasks pay no Slayer points unless the one you pick rolls the points Mortifier.

How to Unlock Mortimer

You meet Mortimer partway through Fallen From Grace. The quest sends you into Wyrmscraig Cavern on a raft or skiff (a sloop cannot fit through the cave), where a talking skeleton asks you to kill three level 69 mountain trolls blocking the path. Once the rocks are cleared he introduces himself and can assign tasks straight away. You do not have to finish the quest first.

To get back later, a Slayer ring teleports you into the cavern once the quest is complete. You can also take the cathedral stairs down after the quest, or sail into the cave again.

For the rest of the island, including the bank chest and the Mad Angel, see our Wyrmscraig guide.

Mortimer Task List (All 29 Tasks)

Every task Mortimer can assign is below, with the kill count, the extended count if you own that extension, weight and requirements. The last two columns are the ranges the Slayer Point and Superior Drop Rate Mortifiers can roll on that task. A weight-10 task is picked 25% more often than a weight-8 task.

He ignores master-specific unlocks, so he can give you gryphons, aquanites or basilisks even if you never bought their Slayer Reward unlocks. Extensions still apply. He is the only master who assigns venators directly, and he shares hydras with Konar, infernal mages with Vannaka and rockslugs with Mazchna, which used to be single-master tasks.

Where a task has a boss you can kill the boss on task, but superiors only spawn from the regular monsters. If you are on Mortimer for superior drops, do the task on the normal version.

Mortimer Block List

Mortimer has his own block list with two slots, and each block costs 120 points. It is separate from your Duradel or Nieve list. A skip costs 100 points and Turael cannot replace his tasks, so blocks and the task choice are your only filters.

Because you already choose from two or three tasks, a block only saves you when every option offered is one you would refuse. Put the two slots on weight-10 tasks you turn down every time, since those come up most.

Blocks for an imbued heart or eternal gem hunt

Unique odds from a superior scale with the monster's Slayer requirement. The wiki formula puts the imbued heart at 1 in 8 × (200 − (Slayer req + 55)² ÷ 125) per superior before any Mortifier, and the eternal gem has the same odds. That is about 1/1,370 for a crawling hand superior and 1/160 for a hydra superior.

The seven low-level weight-10 tasks (crawling hands, cave crawlers, banshees, rockslugs, cockatrice, pyrefiends and infernal mages) are the natural blocks for that goal. They also carry the smallest superior boost of the weight-10 tasks at 50–100%, against 200–300% on turoth, gargoyles, wyrms or dark beasts. Two slots cannot cover all seven, so block the two you like least.

Wait until you have 50 Mortimer tasks done. Those low tasks are only 35–50 kills, which makes them the quickest way through the 15, 25, 40 and 50 completion thresholds that unlock the other Mortifiers and the third choice.

Tasks to keep

Hydras have the best unique odds on his list and a 75–150% superior boost. Dark beasts are only 40–60 kills with a 200–300% boost and about 1/254 heart odds per superior.

05

Mortifiers: Every Modifier and When It Unlocks

Mortifiers are the modifiers attached to his offered tasks. One or more of the options will carry one, and they unlock by the number of Mortimer tasks you complete. Values move in 5% steps.

Table 3Mortifier unlocks6 rows
Tasks doneMortifierWhat it does
0Slayer PointPays points on completion: 5–15 on the low tasks, up to 25–40 on basilisks, wyrms, kurask, aquanites and drakes
0Task QuantityChanges the kill count. Low tasks roll −15 to +30 kills; higher tasks gain 30 to 150. Abyssal demons at 200–250 with +75 become 275–325
15Clue ScrollHigher clue drop rate: 75–150% on most tasks, 35–75% on six of them, and none on crawling hands, cave crawlers, rockslugs, infernal mages, custodian stalkers and dust devils
25Superior Drop RateSuperiors roll the superior unique table more often, from 10–25% up to 200–300% depending on the task
40Slayer XPMore Slayer XP from the monster and its superior, from 5–15% up to 25–100%
50Third Task ChoiceA third option on every assignment

Jagex roughly halved these thresholds in its 27 July 2026 post after player feedback. The first proposal needed 100 tasks for the third choice.

Your enchanted gem or Slayer ring shows which Mortifier the current task has, but only a Slayer Master tells you the exact percentage, and the gem loses it if you log out. If the Slayer cape effect triggers on a Mortimer task, you keep both the task and its modifier, so a hydra task with a 150% superior boost can run a second time.

06

Who Should Use Mortimer

  • Accounts chasing the imbued heart, eternal gem, or mist and dust battlestaves. Every Mortimer task has a superior, though superiors still need the Bigger and Badder unlock (50 points).
  • Players who want to pick their task. His streak is counted separately from your normal one.
  • 99 Slayer accounts under 100 Combat, who can use him by showing the cape.

Players training for XP and points should stay on Duradel or Nieve. Mortimer pays no points by default and his low tasks give 5–15 at best, while Duradel pays 15 for every task before streak bonuses.

09 · Bottom line

Bottom Line

Mortimer is a superior-hunting master. Get 100 Combat and 70 Slayer, reach him in Fallen From Grace, use the short low tasks to clear 50 completions, then spend your two blocks on low-level tasks and take the tasks with 200–300% superior boosts when they are offered.
