Overview: Chaos Fanatic at a Glance

The Chaos Fanatic is a level 202 Wilderness boss with 225 hitpoints, standing west of the Lava Maze at level 42 Wilderness in single-way combat. Nothing unlocks him; you just walk up and attack. The standard strategy is to range him with Protect from Magic on, take a step whenever he fires three green orbs, and keep every inventory slot full so his disarm attack has nowhere to put your weapon.

Ranged is the style to use. His Magic level is 200 and his melee defences sit between +250 and +260, while his defence against standard ammunition is only +50. Protect from Magic negates all damage from his normal red projectile.

Single-way combat keeps PKers off you while he is attacking you. They can still hit you during the 9 seconds between his death and respawn, so that is the window to watch. In our boss index he is a 2 out of 5, the entry fight of the Wilderness group.

Access Requirements

There are none. No quest, diary or Slayer unlock gates the Chaos Fanatic, which is why he is the usual first Wilderness boss. What you do need is 37 Prayer for Protect from Magic and a ranged weapon; the wiki's money-making entry for him assumes at least a rune crossbow at 61 Ranged.

Chaos Fanatic Location and How to Get There

He stands west of the Lava Maze at level 42 Wilderness. The fastest route is Ghorrock Teleport (96 Magic on Ancient Magicks) or its tablet. A burning amulet to the Lava Maze lands you at level 41; run west from there. With the hard Wilderness diary and a POH obelisk you can pick the level 44 obelisk directly.

Teleport jewellery and the royal seed pod only work up to level 30, and standard spellbook teleports only up to level 20, so plan the walk south before you need it. The altar to the south-west recharges prayer, but the wiki calls it a highly active PK spot.

Recommended Combat Stats and Gear

The wiki suggests 75+ Ranged, 70+ Defence and 37+ Prayer. Magic only matters if you want Ghorrock Teleport.

• Weapon: Webweaver bow or Craw's bow first, then the twisted bow, the bow of Faerdhinen with crystal armour, the scorching bow, and the magic shortbow (i) or crystal bow.
• Body: Masori body (f), crystal body or a blessed d'hide body, with black d'hide chaps.
• Head: Slayer helmet (i) on a Chaos Fanatic task, otherwise a blessed d'hide coif or archer helm.
• Cape: Ava's accumulator, Ava's assembler or Dizana's quiver.
• Only bring what you are willing to lose. PKers know his respawn timer.

Inventory and Supplies

• 2 divine ranging potions.
• 4 to 6 blighted super restores.
• A looting bag.
• Summer or wild pies for food. Each heals 22 per slot over two bites and leaves a pie dish, so the slot stays filled.
• Turn off vial smashing in settings so empty vials also hold their slots.

A full inventory is the whole counter to his disarm. He cannot remove your weapon if there is no free slot to put it in.

Mechanics: Attack Styles, Max Hits and Immunities

• Red projectile: his normal magic attack. Protect from Magic negates all of it.
• Green disarm: an unavoidable projectile that unequips your weapon, unless your inventory is full.
• Explosion: three slow green projectiles. One always targets the tile you stand on when he casts, so moving a short distance in any direction avoids it.
• After every explosion he uses only red attacks for the next 12 attacks. At the start of the fight and after each cooldown, each attack has a 10/15 chance to be red, 4/15 to be an explosion and 1/15 to be the disarm.
• Since April 2025 the explosion only affects the last player who attacked him.

Where Chaos Fanatic Sits in Progression

Chaos Fanatic is the entry point for the Wilderness boss group, so there is nothing easier here to warm up on. Above it sit Artio and Calvar'ion.

Chaos Fanatic Strategy Step by Step

   Fill every inventory slot before you arrive and turn off vial smashing.

   Switch on Protect from Magic before you get close.

   He is aggressive.

3. 3

   Shoot him from range.

   When three green orbs come out, take a step or two in any direction.

   After an explosion you have 12 red attacks of breathing room, so just keep shooting.

   Watch the 9 second respawn gap.

   That is when PKers who have been waiting move in.

   When supplies run low, walk south below level 30 before you teleport.

Chaos Fanatic Drop Table: Notable Drops

Odium shard 1 and malediction shard 1 are the first of three pieces for the odium ward and malediction ward; shards 2 and 3 come from the Crazy Archaeologist and Scorpia. The pet is the same one the Chaos Elemental drops. Current GP per kill: OSRS Wiki.

Chaos Fanatic Combat Achievements

Sorry, What Was That? is just the normal strategy done cleanly: step off every explosion. For Praying to the Gods, the nearby altar recharges prayer without counting as a potion, but you are standing in a PK hotspot while you use it. More tasks are in our Combat Achievements guide.

Slayer and Ironman Notes

He is a boss task from Krystilia, Konar, Nieve and Duradel, worth 253 Slayer XP per kill. Konar tasks add the Brimstone key, Krystilia tasks add the Larran's key and Slayer's enchantment (1/30).

For ironmen he is an easy early source of an ancient staff and the first ward shards, with nothing to unlock first.

Common Mistakes and Death Causes

• Leaving free inventory slots, so the disarm takes your bow off.
• Standing still when the three green orbs fly.
• Bringing gear you cannot afford to lose to a PKer waiting out the respawn.
• Trying to melee or mage into +250 melee and +280 magic defence.
• Using the altar without checking who is around.
• Trying to teleport out above level 30.
