The short version
30-second read- Clear a tier when it feels boring. Surviving once is not enough, because the gap between one kill and reliable kills is where the next tier's deaths come from.
- Move up after two or three routine bosses. Routine means full trips, no deaths and no checking a guide mid-kill.
- Scurrius is where prayer switching starts. It uses melee, ranged and magic, with no requirement to enter the Varrock Sewers.
- A stuck tier usually means one mechanic. Each boss's own guide names the mechanic that kills learners first.
OSRS Boss Progression, Easiest to Hardest
The usual OSRS boss progression starts at Scurrius and the Giant Mole, moves through Barrows, the Moons of Peril, Zulrah, Vorkath and the God Wars generals, and finishes with the raids, the Inferno and the Fortis Colosseum. The path below is that route in nine steps. Under it, all 97 bosses in our index are sorted into five difficulty tiers: 8 at tier 1, 11 at tier 2, 32 at tier 3, 30 at tier 4 and 16 at tier 5.
- 1
Scurrius (no requirement, Varrock Sewers) and the Giant Mole (spade and light source).
Scurrius uses melee, ranged and magic, so this is where prayer switching starts.
- 2
Barrows (Priest in Peril).
Six brothers, one protection prayer each, and a chest at the end of every run.
- 3
Sarachnis and the King Black Dragon for longer trips and your first antifire setup.
- 4
Moons of Peril (Perilous Moons) and the Dagannoth Kings, where you react to tells instead of a timer.
- 5
Zulrah (Regicide) and Vorkath (Dragon Slayer II), the first solo bosses with phases you have to learn:
Zulrah's rotations, Vorkath's acid walk and zombified spawn.
- 6
The Fight Caves: 63 waves ending in TzTok-Jad, no requirements.
If Jad is the wall, our fire cape service can do the run for you.
- 7
God Wars generals (K'ril Tsutsaroth needs 70 Hitpoints, General Graardor 70 Strength and a hammer) and whichever Slayer bosses your level allows, such as Abyssal Sire at 85 or Cerberus at 91.
- 8
Chambers of Xeric as a learner, the Gauntlet (Song of the Elves) and the four Desert Treasure II bosses.
- 9
Theatre of Blood, Tombs of Amascut (Beneath Cursed Sands), the Inferno, the Colosseum and the Awakened DT2 bosses.
The tiers rank mechanical demand. Fight length and loot play no part. A tier 3 boss expects you to hold prayer and switch under pressure; a tier 5 boss assumes everything below it is automatic. Skipping a tier is possible, and it is where most people decide bossing is not for them.

How to Use the Tiers
Work upward, and treat a tier as cleared when the fight is boring rather than when you have survived it once. The gap between "I killed it" and "I kill it reliably" is where the next tier's deaths come from.
If a tier feels impossible, the problem is usually one specific mechanic rather than the whole fight. Each boss's own guide names the mechanic that kills learners first.
FAQ
How many bosses are there in OSRS?
Jagex has no official count. The OSRS Wiki's list of bosses has 88 entries, or 93 if you split paired bosses such as Artio and Callisto. This ladder ranks 97 because it also counts elite monsters, wave challenges and the Awakened DT2 variants. The bosses list breaks the count down by group.
When should I move up a tier?
When two or three bosses in your current tier feel routine: full trips, no deaths, and no checking a guide mid-kill. One lucky kill at a tier 4 boss doesn't mean tier 3 is done.
Can I skip tiers?
Mechanically, sometimes. In practice the skipped tier is where you would have learned the habit the harder boss assumes you already have.
Still stuck on a mechanic? Ask the team on our Discord, it is free.
Bottom Line
Follow the nine-step path from the top and use the tier tables for side options: if Zulrah is your current step, anything else in tier 3 your account can reach is fair game too.
Chambers of Xeric and Theatre of Blood each gate six entries on this page, more than any single quest, so learning one raid opens more of the ladder than anything else you can unlock. The ceiling is tier 5: the Inferno, the Colosseum, Yama and the raid final bosses.
Each row links to its own guide for mechanics and drops.
