OSRS Chaos Elemental Guide: Gear, Location and Drops

Chaos Elemental at a Glance

The Chaos Elemental is a level 305 boss with 250 hitpoints that floats just west of the Rogues' Castle in the deep, multi-combat Wilderness. There is no entry requirement, and killing it is one of the hard Wilderness Diary tasks.

It has three attacks. Discord deals magic, ranged or melee damage, and you cannot tell which from the projectile, though magic is the most common. Confusion teleports you a short distance away from it. Madness unequips up to four worn items, always starting with your weapon. Keep your inventory completely full and Madness cannot remove anything.

Most people kill it for the dragon pickaxe (1/256), the dragon 2h sword (1/64) and the pet chaos elemental (1/300).

Access Requirements

No quest, skill or diary is needed. The wiki suggests 80+ Attack and Strength, 70+ Defence and 75+ Ranged, and at least 37 Prayer for Protect from Magic (70 recommended).

The hard Wilderness Diary is worth having before you farm it, because it lets you pick your obelisk destination. The boss requirements checklist covers bosses that do have gates.

Chaos Elemental Location and How to Get There

The Chaos Elemental roams just west of the Rogues' Castle in the members' Wilderness.

• With the hard Wilderness Diary, redirect a Wilderness obelisk (from your house or outside the Ferox Enclave) to level 50 and run west. This is the shortest route and needs no items.
• With the elite diary, Wilderness sword 4 to the Fountain of Rune.
• Annakarl Teleport or its tablet (needs Desert Treasure I), then north-west to a gate in the fence and north-east from there.
• From Edgeville bank, bring a knife or slash weapon, pull the lever, cut the web and run east past the Resource Area and the Scorpion Pit. The Mage Arena lever works the same way with two webs.

Without the hard diary, obelisks send you to a random obelisk, and one of them is just south-east of the Rogues' Castle.

Best Gear for the Chaos Elemental

Ranged is the usual style. The wiki lists the webweaver bow or craw's bow first, then the twisted bow, bow of Faerdhinen, toxic blowpipe and Armadyl crossbow, with d'hide armour. Only bring three or four valuable items unless you are confident escaping, since smites and PK teams are common here.

For flinching, any melee weapon works and high offensive bonuses matter more than speed. A full Verac's set kills fast but one piece can be lost to a smite. A lower-risk choice is a godsword, a dragon warhammer with a defender, or Dharok's greataxe, plus monk's robes for prayer bonus.

Inventory and Supplies

• Food that leaves something in the slot, such as summer pies, curry or Guthix rest, so your inventory never has a free space.
• Armadyl brews as food and a Ranged boost, with vial smashing turned off so empty vials stay in the slot.
• Three to five blighted super restores.
• A divine ranging potion.
• Anti-venom or antidote++ for PKers' venom weapons.
• A ring of wealth (i) switch if you want the doubled elite clue rate.

Where the Chaos Elemental Sits in Progression

It is harder than the single-way Chaos Fanatic and Crazy Archaeologist because it is in multi-combat, but it needs no diary, unlike the lair bosses Callisto and Vet'ion. The Fanatic also drops the pet chaos elemental, at a lower rate.

Chaos Elemental Strategy: Full Inventory, Flinch or Safe Spot

   Fill every inventory slot.

   With no free space, Madness has nowhere to put your gear and it uses Discord or Confusion instead. If you leave exactly one slot open, Madness can only remove one item.

   Pray Protect from Magic.

   Discord's damage type is random, but magic comes up most often.

   Solo, flinch it.

   Attack once, run behind the dead trees at the south-west tip of the Rogues' Castle, wait for its health bar to disappear and repeat.

   For low-level or low-geared accounts, the wiki's safe spot near the Wilderness Resource Area works once set up:

   mark a north-south tile line, lure it onto that line, then attack from one tile west where it cannot hit back. Expect about 10 hits while you set it up.

   Do not stay on one world for long.

   It is deep multi, and the wiki warns that PKers turn up often.

Chaos Elemental Drops

Every kill gives one minor drop (blighted anglerfish, blighted karambwan, a blighted super restore, dragon bones or a super combat dose) alongside a major drop. The dragon pickaxe is rolled before the main table.

Chaos Elemental Combat Achievements

There are four tasks worth 13 points. A full-inventory flinching kill clears The Flincher and Hoarder at once.

Ironman Notes

Krystilia, Konar, Nieve and Duradel can assign the Chaos Elemental. Each kill is 268.75 Slayer XP.

The safe spot method suits ironmen without good ranged gear. The dragon pickaxe is the main target, and the pet and dragon 2h sword can also come from other sources: the Chaos Fanatic drops the pet, and other Wilderness bosses drop the 2h and pickaxe.

Common Mistakes

• Leaving free inventory slots, so Madness strips your weapon mid-fight.
• Letting vial smashing open a slot after a potion dose.
• Praying Melee or Missiles. Magic is the most common Discord damage type.
• Staying on one world too long in deep multi.
• Risking more than three or four valuable items.
