The short version
30-second read- High Level Alchemy works in F2P. It needs 55 Magic and gives 65 XP per cast, up to 78,000 XP an hour on free worlds.
- Giant spiders are the F2P AFK melee spot. The level 50 spiders in the Stronghold of Security attack every combat level, hit up to 7 and give 200 XP per kill.
- Stop Prayer at 43 in F2P. Big bones and vile ashes get there in under 90 minutes; 99 takes about 112 F2P hours versus 20 as a member.
- Body tiaras are the fastest F2P Runecraft. They reach up to 47,000 XP an hour on a PvP world and need only 1 Runecraft to bind.
OSRS F2P Training: The Short Answer
Free-to-play has fewer training methods than members, but the good ones are well known. Take the free quest XP first, get a rune scimitar at 40 Attack, use High Level Alchemy at 55 Magic (it works on free worlds), and treat Prayer as a 43 target rather than a 99 grind.
- 1
Melee:
giant frogs from about 20, moss giants from 40, then the level 50 giant spiders in the Stronghold of Security for AFK training to 99. Brutus gives double combat XP if you finish The Ides of Milk.
- 2
Magic:
Imp Catcher and Witch's Potion take you to level 10. Splash for cheap AFK XP, splash Curse for faster XP, then alch from 55.
- 3
Prayer:
The Restless Ghost gives 1,125 XP (level 9). Big bones and vile ashes get you to 43 in under an hour and a half. The Bone Yard is free but slow.
- 4
Runecraft:
earth runes from 9, body runes from 20. Body tiaras are the fastest F2P method at up to 47,000 XP/hr on a PvP world.
Before You Start: Free XP and Starter Gear
A fresh F2P account should claim the quest XP before grinding anything. These quests are short, cost almost nothing and remove the slowest early levels.
| Quest or unlock | Reward | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| The Restless Ghost | 1,125 Prayer XP | Prayer 1 to 9, no requirements |
| Imp Catcher + Witch's Potion | 875 + 325 Magic XP | Level 10 Magic before your first cast |
| Vampyre Slayer | 4,825 Attack XP | Level 20 Attack, no Defence XP, so pure-safe |
| The Ides of Milk | Brutus, cowbell amulet, 1,000 XP lamp (any combat skill or Prayer) | Unlocks the best active F2P combat target |
| Below Ice Mountain | Ruins of Camdozaal (needs 16 quest points) | Body golems, the barronite mace and fish offering for Prayer |
| Dragon Slayer I | 18,650 Strength and 18,650 Defence XP | Rune platebody, green d'hide body, Crandor access (needs 32 quest points) |
| Stronghold of Security | 10,000 coins and fighting or fancy boots | Opens the giant spider floor; needs two-factor authentication to claim |
For gear, the F2P melee training page is clear: use the best scimitar you can wield, and the rune scimitar at 40 Attack has the highest damage per second in F2P. Wear the amulet of strength when it raises your max hit, otherwise the amulet of power. A chainbody gives more crush defence than a platebody. Jugs of wine are the cheap food: each heals 11 and lowers Attack by 2.
If you are new to the game, our beginner tips and best quests for beginners cover the rest of the first week.
Pick Your Method: F2P Training Compared
Melee XP is 4 per point of damage in the style you train, plus 1.33 Hitpoints XP, according to the Combat page. The wiki gives no hourly melee rates for F2P monsters, so the melee rows below show XP per kill. Everything else uses the wiki's hourly figures.
| Method | Skill and level | XP | Cost | Attention | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Giant spiders | Melee, 60+ | 200 per kill | Food only | AFK, re-aggro every 10 min | AFK mains |
| Moss giants | Melee, 40–60+ | 240 per kill | Food; drops pay back | Medium | XP plus loot |
| Brutus | Melee, 20–99 | 464 per kill (2x bonus) | None, drops food | High, dodge attacks | Active players |
| Splash Fire Strike | Magic, 13+ | 13,800/hr | 1 mind + 2 air per cast | AFK, click every 20 min | Pures, AFK |
| Splash Curse | Magic, 19+ | ~34,000/hr | 2 water + 1 body per cast | High, every cast | Pures |
| High Level Alchemy | Magic, 55+ | 78,000/hr max | 1 nature + item, can profit | Medium | Everyone |
| Big bones + vile ashes | Prayer, any | ~100,000/hr | Bought bones and ashes | High | Fast 43 |
| Bone Yard | Prayer, any | ~6,000/hr | Free, Wilderness risk | Medium | Zero-GP alts |
| Body runes, teleports | Runecraft, 20+ | ~20,000/hr | Pure essence; runes sell | High | Cheaper RC |
| Body tiaras | Runecraft, any | Up to 47,000/hr | Tiara + talisman each | High | Fastest RC |
F2P Combat Training Spots by Level
The level bands below follow the wiki's F2P melee training page. Attack and Strength should be at the start of the band; Defence can lag if you bring more food.
| Levels | Monster | Location | HP (XP per kill) | Why go |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1–20 | Monks | Edgeville Monastery | 15 (60) | Monks heal you for free, so no food |
| 1–20 | Seagulls (level 3) | Port Sarim | 10 (40) | They cannot hit you |
| 10–20 | Minotaurs | Stronghold of Security, floor 1 | 10 (40) | Iron arrows, rune essence, skull sceptre piece |
| 20–40 | Giant frogs | Lumbridge Swamp | 23 (92) | Big bones every kill, low damage |
| 30–50 | Hill giants | Edgeville Dungeon (brass key) | 35 (140) | Big bones, limpwurt roots, giant keys for Obor |
| 40–60 | Moss giants | Varrock Sewers, Crandor | 60 (240) | Big bones, runes, mossy keys for Bryophyta |
| 50–70 | Ice giants | Asgarnian Ice Dungeon | 70 (280) | Alchables and adamant arrows, but tougher than moss giants |
| 60–99 | Giant spiders (level 50) | Stronghold of Security, floor 3 | 50 (200) | Aggressive to every level: the F2P AFK spot |
| 80–99 | Ogresses | Corsair Cove Dungeon | 82 (328) | Rune items and gems to alch; start The Corsair Curse, bring 37 and 43 Prayer |
| 80–99 | Lesser demons | Crandor and Karamja Dungeon | 79 (316) | Vile ashes and rune med helms; max hit 8 |
Giant spiders vs moss giants
These two are the usual AFK question. Both lose aggression after 10 minutes in the same area (tolerance), so neither is truly hands-off. The difference is drops against convenience.
| Detail | Giant spider (level 50) | Moss giant (level 42) |
|---|---|---|
| Hitpoints / melee XP per kill | 50 / 200 | 60 / 240 |
| Max hit | 7 | 6 |
| Aggression | Aggressive to all combat levels | Aggressive until combat level 85 |
| Drops | Beginner clue scrolls only | Big bones, law, nature, chaos and cosmic runes, mossy keys |
| Food | Salmon from the river at Barbarian Village, or bank at Edgeville | Long walk to a bank from both spots |
| Getting there | Walk through floors 1 and 2 of the stronghold once | Knife or slash weapon for the sewer webs; Crandor after Dragon Slayer I |
Pick giant spiders if your stats are around 60 and you want the most AFK option: when they stop attacking, run to the next corner of the room or climb the ladder up and down to reset them. Pick moss giants from 40 if you want each kill to pay you back: besides the bones and runes they drop black square shields and mithril swords that are worth casting High Level Alchemy on. The wiki warns that an unattended player can still die at spiders, so hardcore ironmen should stay at the screen.

Brutus: double XP for active players
After The Ides of Milk, Brutus in the Lumbridge cow field has a +100% XP bonus and 58 hitpoints, so a kill is worth about 464 combat XP. He is instanced, drops a raw t-bone steak and bull bones (40 Prayer XP) every kill, and has a 1 in 30 chance at the mooleta, the only F2P shield-slot item with a Strength bonus. The catch: his special attacks scale with your Hitpoints level and have to be dodged. Ringing the cowbell amulet cuts his respawn from 21.6 to 7.8 seconds. Our Brutus guide covers the mechanics.

F2P pures
In F2P every melee or Ranged kill also gives Hitpoints XP, so a pure's only clean XP comes from quest rewards, dummies and lamps, says the F2P combat pure guide. Vampyre Slayer gives Attack only. A 40 Defence rune pure should do Dragon Slayer I at around 30 to 33 Defence, because its 18,650 Defence XP can push you past 40. Magic does not raise combat level while it stays at or below Ranged or two-thirds of Attack plus Strength, and splashing gives no Hitpoints XP. For members builds, see our pure builds guide.
F2P Magic: Splashing vs Curse vs Alching
Magic matters more in F2P than in members: there are no teleport tablets, so most teleports depend on your Magic level, and Falador Teleport at 37 is the highest one. Start with Imp Catcher and Witch's Potion for level 10, which already makes Wind Strike hit up to 6.
| Method | Level | XP per cast | XP/hr | Runes per cast | Attention |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Splash Wind Strike | 1 | 5.5 | 7,200 | 1 mind (staff of air) | AFK |
| Splash Fire Strike | 13 | 11.5 | 13,800 | 1 mind + 2 air (staff of fire) | AFK |
| Splash Curse | 19 | 29 | ~34,000 | 2 water + 1 body (staff of earth) | Click every cast |
| Low Level Alchemy | 21 | 31 | Up to 2,000 casts/hr | 1 nature + 3 fire | Medium |
| Splash Fire Bolt | 35 | 22.5 | 26,800 | 1 chaos + 3 air (staff of fire) | AFK |
| Enchant ruby amulets | 49 | 59 | 111,000 (clicking) | 1 cosmic + amulet (staff of fire) | Very high |
| High Level Alchemy | 55 | 65 | 78,000 | 1 nature + 5 fire | Medium |
| Fire Blast on ice giants + alching | 59 | 34.5 base, plus 2 per damage | ~70,000, or ~148,000 with alching | 1 death + 4 air, plus alch runes | High |
How to set up a splash
- 1
Get your Magic attack bonus to -64 or lower with full metal armour and d'hide vambraces, per the Splashing page. For Curse, the wiki recommends -65.
- 2
Pick a target outside most of Lumbridge.
Since 11 July 2019 you get no Magic XP for failed casts there once you have 10 Magic. The wiki suggests the lesser demon on the top floor of the Wizards' Tower, which it calls safe even for hardcore ironmen.
- 3
Turn on autocast and Auto Retaliate.
You stop retaliating after 20 minutes without input, so click once every 20 minutes.
- 4
Bring enough runes for the session.
Splashing never deals damage, so it gives no Hitpoints XP.
Curse cannot be cast again on a target it has already lowered, but a splash never lands, so you can recast at once. That is why Curse splashing runs at about 34,000 XP/hr while costing only two water runes and a body rune with a staff of earth.
At 33 Magic, Telekinetic Grab (43 XP) lets you grab wines of Zamorak in the Chaos Temple north of Falador. Taking the wine drains your stats, including Magic, so bring wizard's mind bombs to stay above 33. For the members side of Magic, see our Magic 1–99 guide.
F2P Prayer: Bone Yard, Chaos Temple and Lesser Demons
The wiki calls Prayer one of the most difficult F2P skills because it is expensive, slow and click-heavy. Do The Restless Ghost first for level 9, then decide between paying for bones and collecting them yourself.
| Method | XP each | XP/hr | Cost and risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bury big bones | 15 | 43,500 | Buy the bones |
| Scatter vile ashes | 25 | 72,500 | Buy the ashes |
| Big bones and vile ashes together | 40 per tick | ~100,000 realistic (116,000 cap) | Both, banking each inventory |
| Bone Yard bones and big bones | 4.5 / 15 | ~6,000 (9,300 at best) | Free; level 32 Wilderness, level 25 skeletons |
| Camdozaal fish offering | 10 per tetra | 2,400 (plus Fishing and Cooking XP) | Free; needs Below Ice Mountain |
| Bull bones from Brutus | 40 | Depends on kill speed | Free while training combat |
The Bone Yard has 34 bones spawns and 6 big bones spawns. Wait out the skeletons' 10-minute aggression timer first, then pick up and bury with an empty inventory so your run energy lasts. World hopping does not reset that timer, and walking too far away does.

Which Chaos Temple is free-to-play?
Three buildings share the name, and only one has the famous bone-saving altar. That one is members-only.
| Temple | Where | Use for F2P players |
|---|---|---|
| Chaos Temple (Wilderness) | Level 11 Wilderness, north of Varrock | Bone spawns to bury and no monsters on F2P worlds. The altar only restores Prayer points. |
| Chaos Temple (Asgarnia) | North of Falador | Wine of Zamorak to Telekinetic Grab for Magic XP; not a Prayer training spot |
| Chaos Temple (church) | Level 38 Wilderness, west of the Lava Maze | Free players can enter, but the 350% XP and 50% bone save are members-only |
Lesser demons are the F2P ash source. They live in the Crandor and Karamja Dungeon (partial Dragon Slayer I and a 30-coin boat to Karamja), the Wizards' Tower cage, the Lava Maze and the Demonic Ruins. Each drops vile ashes for 25 XP, and they have a 40% weakness to water spells, so they train Magic and Prayer together. The wiki notes giant frogs still give faster Prayer XP among bone-dropping monsters because they die so quickly.
F2P Runecraft: Earth Runes, Body Runes and Tiaras
F2P players can craft air, mind, water, earth, fire and body runes, but not cosmic, chaos, nature, law or death runes. Pure essence gives the same XP as rune essence, so buy whichever is cheaper.
| Levels | Method | XP each | XP/hr | Needs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1–9 | Air runes, altar south of Falador | 5 per essence | Not listed | 194 essence |
| 9–20 | Earth runes, altar north-east of Varrock | 6.5 per essence | ~6,911 | Stay here over fire runes (~6,533) |
| 20–99 | Body runes, skull sceptre (i) + Falador Teleport | 7.5 per essence | ~20,000 (25,000 on a PvP world) | 37 Magic, energy potions |
| Any | Earth tiaras + Varrock Teleport | 32.5 per tiara | Up to 27,000 | 25 Magic, tiara + earth talisman each |
| Any | Body tiaras on a PvP world | 37.5 per tiara | Up to 47,000 | 31 Magic, skull sceptre (i), tiara + body talisman each |
Earth runes vs body tiaras comes down to cost. Earth runes pay you a little and run at about 6,900 XP/hr. Body tiaras cost a tiara and a talisman every time but run nearly seven times faster. Binding a tiara needs only 1 Runecraft; making a plain tiara needs 23 Crafting, or you buy them.
Body runes are the F2P middle ground. From 46 you get two runes per essence and from 92 three, so the runes you sell grow with your level. The wiki puts energy potions at 30 to 50% more XP for every method in the table. The PvP-world rates need 20 hours of play, 10 quest points and 100 total level to enter, and you can be attacked outside the Lumbridge safe zone.
Best F2P Method per Skill, by Level
Here is the same advice as a level-by-level route. Where a row names two methods, start with the first one.
| Skill | Levels | Best F2P method | XP/hr or XP per action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Attack, Strength, Defence | 1–20 | Monks or seagulls; Vampyre Slayer for Attack | 40–60 per kill |
| Attack, Strength, Defence | 20–40 | Giant frogs, or Brutus after The Ides of Milk | 92 / 464 per kill |
| Attack, Strength, Defence | 40–60 | Moss giants or hill giants | 240 / 140 per kill |
| Attack, Strength, Defence | 60–99 | Giant spiders (AFK); ogresses or lesser demons for loot | 200 / 316–328 per kill |
| Magic | 1–10 | Imp Catcher and Witch's Potion | 1,200 XP total |
| Magic | 10–55 | Splash Fire Strike (AFK) or Curse (clicky) | 13,800 / ~34,000 |
| Magic | 55–99 | High Level Alchemy; Fire Blast plus alching from 59 | 78,000 / ~148,000 |
| Prayer | 1–9 | The Restless Ghost | 1,125 XP |
| Prayer | 9–43 | Big bones and vile ashes; Bone Yard if you have no GP | ~100,000 / ~6,000 |
| Runecraft | 1–20 | Air then earth runes, or body tiaras | ~6,911 / up to 47,000 |
| Runecraft | 20–99 | Body runes with teleports, or body tiaras | ~20,000 / up to 47,000 |
Before You Buy Membership: F2P Checklist
Some F2P levels carry straight into members, others are much cheaper to get after you subscribe. The F2P Prayer page puts it in numbers: 99 Prayer takes 868,962 big bones in F2P but one bond plus 51,724 dragon bones at a members gilded altar, and about 20 hours of offering instead of about 112 hours of burying and scattering.
- Claim all the free quest XP: The Restless Ghost, Imp Catcher, Witch's Potion and Vampyre Slayer.
- Finish Dragon Slayer I (32 quest points) for the rune platebody, green d'hide body and Crandor. Many F2P quests are also requirements for members quests later.
- Get 40 Attack for the rune scimitar, and 40 Defence for rune armour unless the account is a pure.
- Get 43 Prayer for Protect from Melee, then stop. Members Prayer is far cheaper per XP; our Prayer 1–99 guide has the altar maths.
- Get 55 Magic for High Level Alchemy. It works the same way on members worlds, so these levels are never wasted.
- Clear the Stronghold of Security for 10,000 coins and boots, and finish The Ides of Milk for the cowbell amulet and the 1,000 XP lamp.
- Leave Runecraft past 20 unless you enjoy it: members methods in our Runecraft guide are faster.
- Plan your first members combat training with our Nightmare Zone and Pest Control guides before the bond runs.
Hours and Kills to Your Goal
XP needed comes from the wiki's experience table, divided by the hourly rates above. Real sessions with banking and breaks run slower, so treat these as minimums.
| Goal | Method | XP needed | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prayer 9 to 43 | Big bones and vile ashes | 49,214 | About 30 minutes |
| Prayer 9 to 43 | Big bones only (3,281 bones) | 49,214 | About 1.1 hours |
| Prayer 9 to 43 | Bone Yard | 49,214 | About 8 hours |
| Magic 13 to 55 | Splash Fire Strike | 164,803 | About 12 hours |
| Magic 19 to 55 | Splash Curse | 162,663 | About 5 hours |
| Magic 55 to 99 | High Level Alchemy | 12,867,795 | About 165 hours |
| Magic 59 to 99 | Fire Blast on ice giants plus alching | 12,786,545 | About 86 hours |
| Runecraft 1 to 99 | Body tiaras (PvP world) | 13,034,431 | About 277 hours |
| Runecraft 1 to 99 | Earth tiaras | 13,034,431 | About 483 hours |
| Runecraft 20 to 99 | Body runes with teleports | 13,029,961 | About 651 hours (521 on a PvP world) |
| Strength 40 to 60 | Giant spiders / moss giants / Brutus | 236,518 | 1,183 / 986 / 510 kills |
| Strength 60 to 70 | Giant spiders / moss giants | 463,885 | 2,320 / 1,933 kills |
Common Mistakes
- 1
Assuming alching is members-only.
Both alchemy spells are on the standard spellbook in F2P. Skipping 55 Magic leaves 78,000 XP/hr on the table.
- 2
Splashing in Lumbridge.
With 10 or more Magic, failed casts in most of Lumbridge give no XP. Move to the Wizards' Tower or Varrock.
- 3
Standing still after tolerance kicks in.
Giant spiders, moss giants and Bone Yard skeletons stop attacking after 10 minutes. Reset spiders with the room corners or the ladder; at the Bone Yard the calm is what you want.
- 4
Taking bones to the level 38 Chaos Temple.
Its altar bonus is members-only, and the PKers are not. In F2P, bury at the level 11 temple or outside the Wilderness.
- 5
Doing Dragon Slayer I too late on a rune pure.
Its 18,650 Defence XP can take a 34+ Defence account past 40. Do it at 30 to 33 Defence.
Where Paid Help Fits
Most of this page is cheap to do yourself; the cost is time, especially the long F2P Runecraft and alching stretches. If you would rather hand a level range to someone, our Skills training service covers all 24 skills, played by hand with no bots, and you pick the method and the start and end levels on each skill's page.
FAQ
Can free-to-play players use High Level Alchemy?
Yes. High Level Alchemy needs 55 Magic and gives 65 XP per cast on free worlds. Low Level Alchemy is available from 21 Magic. The idea that alching needs membership is a common myth.
What is the best AFK melee training in F2P?
The level 50 giant spiders on the third floor of the Stronghold of Security. They are aggressive to every combat level, have 50 hitpoints and hit up to 7, so from about 60 melee stats you only need to reset aggression every 10 minutes.
Is the Chaos Temple altar free-to-play?
The bone-saving Chaos Altar in level 38 Wilderness only works for members. F2P players can bury free bone spawns at the level 11 Chaos Temple north of Varrock, where its altar only restores Prayer points.
How fast can I get 43 Prayer in F2P?
After The Restless Ghost you need 49,214 XP. That is 3,281 big bones or 1,969 vile ashes, under an hour and a half of burying. With no GP, the Bone Yard takes about 8 hours at 6,000 XP/hr.
Do body tiaras need 20 Runecraft?
No. The wiki lists 1 Runecraft to bind any talisman tiara, including body tiaras at 37.5 XP each. You need 20 Runecraft only to craft body runes.
Does splashing give Hitpoints XP?
No. A splashed spell deals no damage, so you get only the spell's base XP. That is why pures splash Curse or strike spells to train Magic without raising Hitpoints.
Should I train Prayer before or after buying membership?
Get 43 in F2P for Protect from Melee, then wait. The wiki's comparison puts 99 Prayer at about 112 hours of F2P burying against about 20 hours on a members gilded altar.
Still stuck on a mechanic? Ask the team on our Discord, it is free.
Bottom Line
F2P training is mostly about the right order: free quest XP, rune scimitar at 40, giant spiders for AFK melee, and High Level Alchemy at 55, which is available on free worlds. Get Prayer to 43 with bought bones and stop there. Push Runecraft only if you enjoy it, and save the long grinds for membership, where the F2P money making guide can help fund the bond.
