OSRS Cow Boss (Brutus): Drop Rates, Unlock and Hard Mode

Overview: Brutus (the Cow Boss) at a Glance

The OSRS cow boss is Brutus, a level 30 bull in the Lumbridge cow field. You unlock him by finishing The Ides of Milk, a short novice quest with no requirements, and after that you can fight him as often as you like. He is free-to-play, has 58 hitpoints and gives double the normal combat XP.

His uniques are the mooleta (5/150), the bottomless milk bucket (4/150) and cow slippers (1/150), and he drops a beginner clue scroll at 1/15. Hard mode is Demonic Brutus, a level 1,224 version you can only fight after Desert Treasure II.

His melee only hits 3 and Protect from Melee blocks it. The real damage comes from two telegraphed special attacks that hit up to 19 and go straight through prayer, so the fight is about stepping off the right tiles in time.

Access Requirements

The Ides of Milk has no skill or quest requirements and needs no items. The wiki recommends 15 combat. Start it by talking to Cassius beside the Lumbridge pond, south of the windmill. The quest ends with a fight against Brutus. His basic attacks cannot kill you during the quest, though his charge and stomp still can.

Finishing the quest gives 1 quest point and access to Brutus. Talk to Gillie Groats afterwards for the cowbell amulet and a lamp worth 1,000 XP in any combat skill, Prayer included. The boss requirements checklist lists the unlocks for every other boss.

Location and How to Get There

Brutus lives in a pen in the Lumbridge cow field, east of Lumbridge, and the fight is instanced. The cowbell amulet from the quest teleports you to the cow field once charged with air runes, one rune per charge up to 1,000.

Ring the amulet while Brutus is dead and he respawns 13 ticks (7.8 seconds) later instead of 36 ticks (21.6 seconds). Ring it too close to his natural respawn and it can make the wait longer. The altar in Lumbridge church restores prayer between trips.

Recommended Combat Stats and Gear

Melee is the strongest style at higher levels, and at low levels magic usually beats it. Ranged is the weakest, but it lets you use safespots. In free-to-play melee gear, the wiki's top picks are a rune scimitar or barronite mace, rune chainbody and plateskirt, and the mooleta in the off-hand once you have one.

Inventory and Supplies

• Cowbell amulet, for the teleport and the faster respawn.
• Food such as trout. His specials hit up to 19, and how hard depends on your Hitpoints level.
• Strength potions, or a cooked t-bone steak for a Strength boost.
• A tinderbox if you want to burn the logs he drops and cook his raw t-bone steaks mid-trip. Oak logs need 15 Firemaking.
• No cannon. The pen is too muddy to set one up.

Mechanics: Attack Styles, Max Hits and Immunities

He cannot be flinched and is immune to the cannon. He will not charge if the charge would run him into a wall, so standing east of his spawn point stops the charge completely. Low levels can safespot him between the two food troughs at the south end of the pen with ranged, magic or a halberd, where he can neither charge nor reach you.

Where Brutus Sits in Progression

Brutus is the lowest-level boss in the game with telegraphed specials, so he is where most new accounts learn to move on an overhead warning. The next step up is Sarachnis.

Fight Strategy: Dodging the Charge and Stomp

   Turn on Protect from Melee before he spawns.

   It blocks his basic attack completely.

   Watch his overhead text.

   growls means a charge, snorts means a stomp.

   On growls, step one tile to the side within 3 ticks.

   On snorts, step one tile back or one tile to the side within 4 ticks.

   Timed well, you can step straight back in and attack between stomps.

   Stand diagonal to him while attacking and move diagonally away when a special starts.

   The wiki lists this as a way to avoid every special.

   Ring the cowbell amulet as soon as he dies to cut the respawn to 13 ticks.

Hard Mode: Demonic Brutus

Hard mode is Demonic Brutus. Fight Brutus with an abyssal potato in your inventory and the game asks whether you want to feed it to him. Abyssal potatoes only come from the growth in the Scar, so you need Desert Treasure II - The Fallen Empire finished first (quest guide).

Demonic Brutus alternates stomp and charge after three basic attacks, and his warnings get shorter once he drops to 500 hitpoints. In phase 2 every special comes with four projectiles: magic, melee and ranged in that order, then a random fourth. He cannot be killed on a cow Slayer task.

Drops: Mooleta, Milk Bucket and Cow Slippers

Every kill drops bull bones and a raw t-bone steak. Before the main table, each kill also rolls for the uniques below. On free-to-play worlds the seeds and noted steaks on his main table are swapped for coins.

The mooleta and milk bucket are untradeable. Only one of the four cow slipper styles can be traded, so they are the one unique with a Grand Exchange price. We do not quote GP per hour because that price moves.

Is there a cow cape?

No. Brutus has no cape drop, and neither does any other cow. The mooleta, named after a bullfighter's red cloth, is the closest thing to it, and it goes in the shield slot.

Combat Achievements

Brutus has five Combat Achievement tasks, and he is the only free-to-play boss with tasks in the hard and elite tiers.

The speed task means killing him the moment he spawns, so kill him once on entry first and use an instant hit such as a dragon halberd special. Delayed attacks like ranged and magic cannot do it, and free-to-play gear cannot one-hit him. The Combat Achievements guide covers the rest of the tiers.

Ironman Notes

On a cow task from Turael or Spria, each Brutus kill counts and gives 116 Slayer XP, which is a quick start for a new ironman's Slayer.

The mooleta is untradeable, so every account gets it the same way. For a fresh ironman it is the only free-to-play shield-slot item with a melee strength bonus, and beginner clues at 1/15 are the other reason to camp him early.

Common Mistakes and Death Causes

• Standing still on growls or snorts. Both specials ignore Protect from Melee.
• Ringing the cowbell amulet a few seconds before his natural respawn, which can make the wait longer.
• Forgetting to ring the cowbell amulet, which turns a 7.8 second wait into a 21.6 second one.
• Trying to set up a cannon. The pen is too muddy and Brutus is immune anyway.
• Safespotting him from only one tile away. Since the March 2026 update he answers that with his stomp.
