OSRS Bryophyta Guide: How to Get Mossy Keys, Gear & Drops

Bryophyta and Mossy Keys at a Glance

Mossy keys drop from moss giants at 1/150, at 1/100 in the Wilderness and at 1/75 while you are on a moss giant Slayer task. Bryophyta drops them herself at 1/16 (1/8 on a moss giant task), and her chest can give another at 1/16. Since the 25 June 2025 update you only need a key once, to unlock the gate to her lair. After that you can fight her as often as you like and use one key on her chest per kill.

Bryophyta is a level 128 free-to-play moss giant boss with 115 hitpoints, in her lair just east of the moss giants in the Varrock Sewers. She attacks with melee (crush) and magic, both fully blocked by the matching protection prayer, and takes 50% extra damage from fire spells. Her chest is the only source of Bryophyta's essence (1/118), which makes Bryophyta's staff.

The one mechanic to plan for: once she has lost about a quarter of her health she can summon three growthlings, and she takes no damage until they are dead. Only an axe or magic secateurs can kill them.

How to Get Mossy Keys

There is no quest or skill requirement. The only gate is one mossy key, used on the gate to her lair the first time you go in. The key is not used up there; it is spent when you open her chest after a kill. Keys are stackable and untradeable.

The quickest way to stock up is to get the first key from moss giants, then let Bryophyta keep you supplied. The wiki puts members using special attack weapons, a desert amulet 4 or a restoration pool, and a giantsoul amulet for the trip back at 6 to 8 mossy keys an hour. Five keys is the minimum for the Bryophyta Champion combat achievement, because kill count only goes up when you loot the chest.

Where Bryophyta Is and How to Get There

Bryophyta is in her lair in the Varrock Sewers, just east of the moss giants.

Three ways in: walk through the sewers from the Varrock manhole (bring a knife or a slash weapon to cut the web), take the level 51 Agility shortcut near Vannaka in Edgeville Dungeon, or teleport with a charged giantsoul amulet straight to the entrance. She attacks on sight, so pray before you open the gate.

Recommended Combat Stats and Gear

For free-to-play the wiki suggests three setups: 50 Attack, Strength and Defence for melee in green d'hide with a rune kiteshield and rune full helm; 60 Ranged with a maple shortbow and adamant arrows; or 59 Magic for Fire Blast, the fastest free-to-play option because of her fire weakness. At range she does not walk towards you and never uses melee.

Inventory and Supplies

• Food for her 16 melee and 10 magic max hits. With the right prayer on you will barely need it.
• Prayer potions.
• An axe or magic secateurs for growthlings. If you forget, a bronze axe sits in the log pile inside her lair.
• An antipoison on members' worlds, where her hits can poison from 8.
• Your mossy keys, one per chest.
• A teleport out.

Fight Strategy

   Turn on Protect from Magic before you open the gate.

   She attacks on sight.

2. 2

   Stay at range if you can.

   She does not walk to you, so magic is the only attack she can reach you with.

3. 3

   When growthlings spawn, kill them with an axe or magic secateurs; with one equipped you one-shot them. Battleaxes, the zombie axe and the blessed axe do not work.

4. 4

   Use multi-hit specs above 75% health or after the growthlings are dead.

   If the first hitsplat triggers a spawn, the rest of the spec does nothing.

5. 5

   After the kill, open the chest with a key.

   Trying the chest also makes her respawn 15 ticks (9 seconds) later, key or not.

Drops and What Bryophyta Is Worth

Her own drop is a moss-giant-style table: giant bones on members' worlds (buried straight from the floor), small runes, seeds, coins and the 1/16 mossy key. The value sits in the chest: rune armour pieces, 100 nature, cosmic, law or death runes, 2 runite bars, a guaranteed beginner clue, and Bryophyta's essence at 1/118.

The essence becomes Bryophyta's staff: use it on a battlestaff with 62 Crafting (members only), or pay Zaff in Varrock 50,000 coins. The staff needs 30 Attack and 30 Magic, holds up to 1,000 nature runes and has a 1/15 chance to save one each time you cast a spell that uses them.

Combat Achievements

Bryophyta has seven Combat Achievement tasks, five easy and two medium:

• Bryophyta Novice (easy): open her chest once.
• Preparation Is Key (easy): kill her without taking any poison damage.
• Fighting as Intended II (easy): kill her on a free-to-play world.
• A Slow Death (easy): kill her with poison or venom as the final source of damage.
• Protection from Moss (easy): kill her with Protect from Magic active.
• Bryophyta Champion (medium): open her chest 5 times.
• Quick Cutter (medium): kill all 3 growthlings within 3 seconds of the first one dying.

One kill at range on a free-to-play world with Protect from Magic on covers Fighting as Intended II, Protection from Moss and Preparation Is Key together, because she only poisons on members' worlds and growthlings do not poison. Champion needs five keys, since only a chest opening counts.

She counts toward a moss giant Slayer task from Vannaka, at 115 Slayer XP a kill, and being on task doubles her key drop to 1/8.

For ironmen the staff is the prize. High Alchemy burns a nature rune per cast, and a 1/15 save rate adds up over a few thousand casts.

Common Mistakes and Death Causes

• Coming without an axe or magic secateurs. If that happens, take the bronze axe from the log pile in the lair.
• Thinking every fight costs a key. Since June 2025 the key only goes into the chest.
• Opening with a multi-hit spec that triggers growthlings on the first hit.
• Skipping antipoison on a members' world.
• Opening the gate before Protect from Magic is on.
