The short version
30-second read- Step under her to dodge the third hit. Look for a blood siphon as her attack starts, because the third hit heals her 30 to 50 whatever it deals.
- Gear for slash defence before strength. Every hit she lands heals her, so Bandos, Torva or budget Barrows beats low-defence strength gear.
- Pick a one-handed slash weapon and dragon defender. At lower levels it usually beats sulphur blades, because the defender's accuracy and slash defence outweigh the extra hit.
- Blood Moon drops the only melee set. The helm, chestplate, tassets and dual macuahuitl are 1/224 each, and the chest and legs match Bandos strength.
Blood Moon at a Glance
The Blood Moon is the hardest of the three Moons of Peril: a level 329 melee boss with 500 Hitpoints in Neypotzli under Cam Torum, unlocked by the Perilous Moons quest. She heals whenever she or her mechanics damage you, she is weak to slash, and her -2 flat armour adds 2 damage to every hit you land. The part that decides your kill time is the jaguar phase: stand on the glowing sigil, hit the jaguar in front of it, and step one tile toward the boss just before the jaguar attacks.
Every damage source feeds her. Her three-hit standard attack heals her for 1x the first hit, 2x the second and a flat 30 to 50 on the third. Blood pools heal her for 2x what they do to you and jaguar hits for 3x. With low damage and poor defence she can out-heal you, which is why the wiki tells lower-level players to favour defence over strength in their gear.
Protection prayers do nothing here. Eating is fine: food does not heal the boss.

Jaguar Phase: How to Dodge the Blood Jaguars
When the glyph reaches the new moon sigil, the Blood Moon takes up to 15 of your Hitpoints to summon eight blood jaguars in a ring around her, and blood pools start forming in a square around her. One sigil glows. That is your spot, and the jaguar in front of it is the one you fight.
- 1
Run to the glowing sigil and attack the jaguar in front of it.
Each hit heals you for roughly a fifth of the damage you deal to it, until you have won back about 20 Hitpoints.
- 2
Watch the blood pool.
When the splat has fully formed, or the pool sound effect ends, step one tile away from the jaguar, toward the boss.
- 3
Its cleave hits the two tiles in front of it.
Once it has swung, step back and keep attacking.
- 4
Repeat until the phase ends.
The jaguars attack six times and the Moon makes seven sets of pools.
Mistakes here are expensive: jaguar hits heal the Moon for 3x the damage and pools for 2x. A 4-tick weapon stays in sync with the jaguar rhythm, while a 5-tick weapon needs more care with the timing.
Blood Rain
At the full moon sigil she disappears and rains blood, leaving temporary pools across the room. Keep moving off them. A pool hit does up to 9 damage and heals her for twice that, while staying clear chips a little damage off her. The glyph comes back before the rain stops, but pools still sitting on the active sigil hurt, so do not step onto it early.
Standard Attacks and the Step-Under Trick
Her standard attack is the shared Moon attack: three melee hits rolled against your slash defence with max hits of 4, 8 and 20. One miss cancels the rest of that attack. Each hit that lands heals her, and the third heals 30 to 50 no matter how much it did to you.
You can dodge that third hit. As her attack animation starts, look for a blood siphon coming out of your character. If one appears, step under the boss for one tick, click back onto the glyph and keep attacking. It takes focus, but the wiki notes it cuts kill times significantly.
Stay on Eyatlalli's glyph during standard attacks. Off it you take tick damage that starts at 1 and doubles up to 16. The glyph moves clockwise every two attacks, and a special starts when it reaches the full or new moon sigil.
Requirements and How to Get There
You need Perilous Moons: 48 Slayer, 20 Hunter, 20 Fishing, 20 Runecraft and 10 Construction, none boostable, plus Twilight's Promise. Our Perilous Moons quest guide covers the unlock. The wiki suggests 75+ combat with 70+ Attack, Strength and Defence. It also notes that all three Moons can be killed with about 60 Defence in rune armour using Steel Skin, Ultimate Strength and Incredible Reflexes, but calls that impractical for repeat kills and singles out Blood Moon as the hard one.
Get to the Neypotzli entrance at the north end of Cam Torum with a calcified moth, the Cam Torum quetzal landing site, or the Pendant of Ates plus the 47 Agility shortcut. Inside, take the south-west exit into the Ancient Prison. Aggressive level 98 Sulphur Nagua live there, and Protect from Melee blocks their hits. The Blood Moon chamber is east of the Ancient Prison camp. The boss requirements checklist lists the other Varlamore gates.
Best Gear and Weapons for Blood Moon
Gear for defence first. Her healing comes from hits that land, so every point of slash defence cuts both the damage you take and what she heals. Bandos and Torva give strength and defence together; Barrows armour is the budget pick. The wiki also notes that a one-handed slash weapon with a dragon defender usually beats sulphur blades here, because the defender's accuracy and slash defence outweigh the extra hit.
| Budget | Main weapon | Special attack |
|---|---|---|
| Top end | Scythe of Vitur, Soulreaper axe | Dragon claws, or Crystal halberd as the last hit before a phase change |
| Mid level | Blade of Saeldor, Noxious halberd, Ghrazi rapier | Crimson kisten, Voidwaker |
| Budget | Abyssal tentacle, Saradomin's blessed sword, Abyssal whip, Zombie axe, Dragon scimitar | Dragon dagger, Abyssal dagger, Dragon mace |
The -2 flat armour rewards weapons that hit more than once, like the scythe. Defence-draining specs and Death Charge have no effect on any Moon. Magic and Ranged are pointless against +500 magic and ranged defence.
Supplies and Inventory
- Moonlight potions, made in the dungeon from moonlight grub paste and a vial of water (38 Herblore). They boost Attack, Strength and Defence and restore prayer.
- Cooked bream or cooked moss lizard (30 Cooking), caught and cooked at the camps. Higher Cooking, Fishing or Hunter means bigger heals.
- A butterfly net for moonlight moths at 75 Hunter, 22 prayer points each.
- Your spec weapon and an emergency teleport. The boss room also has a quick-escape staircase.
Make more food than you think you need on your first kills. Every mistake against Blood Moon costs you Hitpoints and gives them to her, so her kill times vary much more than the other two Moons'.
Blood Moon Only Route
- 1
From the Lunar Chest, go back through the door into the Ancient Prison.
- 2
Run north to the cooking stove and use Make-cuppa to restore run energy.
- 3
Run east into the Blood Moon chamber and kill her.
You are placed at the cooking stove in the Earthbound Cavern.
- 4
Restock food and potions, then go south-east through the cave entrance into the Streambound Cavern.
- 5
Run directly south to the Lunar Chest and claim your roll.
The wiki lists killing Blood Moon on its own as a money making method. Killing all three Moons before opening the chest gives three unique rolls and six standard loot rolls instead of one of each, so the solo route only makes sense if this is the set you want.
Drops: Blood Moon Armour and the Dual Macuahuitl
Blood Moon kills feed the Lunar Chest. Each kill gives a 1/56 roll at her set: Blood Moon helm, chestplate, tassets or dual macuahuitl, 1/224 each before duplicate protection. You will not get a repeat piece until you own the full set.
| Item | Requirement | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Blood Moon helm, chestplate, tassets | 75 Strength, 50 Defence | Chest and legs have the same strength bonus as Bandos; degrades after 45 hours of combat |
| Dual macuahuitl | 70 Attack, 75 Strength | Never degrades; 4-tick crush weapon that hits twice; the second hit only lands if the first does |
| Full set effect (Bloodrager) | Armour plus dual macuahuitl | 33% chance per successful hit to attack a tick early (3 ticks); about 55% when both hits land |
Moon armour is not recharged. The pieces degrade over 45 hours of combat and then break. Bob or Dunstan repair a broken piece for 1,500,000 coins, or you can do it at an armour stand for 7,500 less per Smithing level, 757,500 at 99.
The wiki's chest table puts a 50% chance at one specific set at 206 chests, and 305 chests for a 50% chance at all 12 pieces. Our Lunar Chest service runs those kills on your account.
Combat Achievements
The Moons of Peril have 12 Combat Achievement tasks worth 33 points. At Blood Moon the tricky ones are Perilous Dancer (Hard: kill all three Moons in one run while only taking damage from regular attacks), Betrayal (Hard: kill a Moon with its own weapon drop, here the dual macuahuitl, a crush weapon against a slash-weak boss) and High Hitter (Elite: kill a Moon before its second special attack).
Ironman Notes
Blood Moon armour is a common stepping stone towards Bandos for irons: the chest and legs give the same strength bonus, slash defence is only slightly lower, and it weighs much less. Each player's damage is tracked separately, so you get full rewards even in a busy room.
Common Mistakes
- Taking the third standard hit every time instead of stepping under the boss. That hit heals her 30 to 50.
- Standing still when the jaguar's blood pool finishes forming.
- Wearing low-defence strength gear on a mid-level account. Every hit she lands heals her.
- Picking sulphur blades over a one-handed slash weapon and dragon defender at lower levels.
- Turning on Protect from Melee. It does nothing against any Moon.
- Ignoring the jaguar. Hitting it is the only way to win back the Hitpoints she siphoned.
FAQ
How does the Blood Moon jaguar phase work?
She takes up to 15 of your Hitpoints to summon eight jaguars. Stand on the glowing sigil, attack the jaguar in front of it to heal back up to about 20 Hitpoints, and step one tile toward the boss when the blood pool finishes forming so its cleave misses. The jaguars attack six times before the phase ends.
Where is the Blood Moon?
In Neypotzli under Cam Torum. Take the south-west exit from the antechamber into the Ancient Prison; her chamber is east of the camp there.
What is the Blood Moon weak to?
Slash. She has 0 slash defence against +100 stab and crush, and -2 flat armour, so multi-hit slash weapons like the scythe do well.
Why does the Blood Moon keep healing?
She heals off damage she deals: 1x and 2x her first two standard hits, 30 to 50 from the third, 2x from blood pools and 3x from jaguar hits. Better defence, stepping under the third hit and dodging the jaguars all cut that healing. Eating does not heal her.
Does Protect from Melee work on the Blood Moon?
No. Protection prayers do nothing against any of the Moons' attacks.
How do I recharge or repair Blood Moon armour?
It has no charges. The helm, chestplate and tassets degrade over 45 hours of combat and then break. Repair costs 1,500,000 coins per piece at Bob or Dunstan, less at an armour stand with high Smithing. The dual macuahuitl never degrades.
What does the Blood Moon set effect do?
Bloodrager: with all three armour pieces and the dual macuahuitl, each successful hit has a 33% chance to let you attack again after 3 ticks instead of 4. If both hits land, the chance rises to about 55%.

Bottom Line
Blood Moon is a race between your damage and her healing. Gear for slash defence, step under the third hit, and treat the jaguar phase as a rhythm: hit, step out as the pool forms, step back. She also drops the only melee set of the three Moons.
