The short version
30-second read- Farm an upgrade for a specific problem. A weapon that lets you skip a mechanic beats better stats you cannot use safely yet.
- Fix mechanic deaths before adding damage. Defensive gear or a prayer switch helps more than extra damage when a mechanic keeps killing you.
- Barrows, Cerberus and demonic gorillas fill most slots. Between them they supply a Barrows set for every style, three pairs of boots and three zenyte pieces.
- Chambers of Xeric anchors the end-game column. It alone supplies the twisted bow, ancestral robes and kodai wand, which is why most accounts learn it first.
OSRS Gear Progression at a Glance
Most accounts follow the same OSRS gear progression for bossing: Barrows armour, an abyssal whip and a fighter torso first, then God Wars armour, zenyte jewellery and Slayer-boss drops, then raid gear such as the twisted bow and the scythe of vitur. The table shows which boss or monster supplies each step for melee, ranged and magic.
| Style | Early | Mid game | End game |
|---|---|---|---|
| Melee | Dharok's, Guthan's, Torag's or Verac's (Barrows); abyssal whip (Abyssal Sire, abyssal demons) | Bandos chestplate and tassets (General Graardor); Neitiznot faceguard (basilisk jaw); primordial boots (Cerberus); amulet of torture (zenyte) | Scythe of vitur and avernic defender (Theatre of Blood); Torva (Nex); Oathplate (Yama) |
| Ranged | Karil's (Barrows); toxic blowpipe from Zulrah's tanzanite fang | Armadyl armour (Kree'arra); pegasian boots (Cerberus); necklace of anguish (zenyte) | Twisted bow (Chambers of Xeric); Masori (Tombs of Amascut); zaryte crossbow (Nex); venator bow (Phantom Muspah) |
| Magic | Ahrim's (Barrows); trident of the seas (Kraken) | Occult necklace (Thermonuclear Smoke Devil); eternal boots (Cerberus); tormented bracelet (zenyte) | Ancestral robes and kodai wand (Chambers of Xeric); Tumeken's shadow (Tombs of Amascut); virtus robes (DT2 bosses) |
Zenyte shards come from demonic gorillas after Monkey Madness II. The fighter torso is the one early piece that comes from a minigame instead of a boss: it costs 375 honour points in each Barbarian Assault role plus one Penance Queen kill, and our fighter torso service plays that part by hand. Once you reach the end-game column, the best-in-slot gear guide covers which piece wins at each boss.
What Each Boss Drops, by Tier
Most upgrades come from one boss, so the tables below list what each boss drops, grouped by the difficulty tier you need to reach to farm it.
Read it as a shopping list in reverse: find the upgrade you want, then look at which tier it sits in and what the boss that drops it requires. That is usually a shorter route than working up the tiers hoping for something useful.

How to Choose Your Next Upgrade
An upgrade is worth farming when it removes a specific problem you are having, not when it is the next number up. A weapon that lets you skip a mechanic is worth more than a weapon with better stats you cannot yet use safely.
We do not price the items above. Grand Exchange values move constantly, and a price list here would be misleading rather than helpful — check current prices on the OSRS Wiki before committing to a grind.
FAQ
What gear should I buy first?
Whatever removes your current blocker. If you are dying to a mechanic, defensive gear or a prayer switch helps more than damage does.
Why are there no prices?
Because they change daily. The reward column tells you what drops; the OSRS Wiki tells you what it is worth today.
Still stuck on a mechanic? Ask the team on our Discord, it is free.
Bottom Line
Pick the next upgrade from the style table at the top, then farm the boss that drops it once you can do full trips there. Barrows, Cerberus and the demonic gorillas fill the most cells in that table: a Barrows set for every style, three pairs of boots and three zenyte pieces.
The end-game column is mostly raid loot. Chambers of Xeric alone supplies the twisted bow, ancestral robes and kodai wand, which is why it is the first raid most accounts learn.
Each row links to its own guide for mechanics and drops.
