For a first boss, pick Scurrius if you are a member (no unlock, built for combat levels 60 to 90), Brutus if you are free-to-play (unlocked by the short quest The Ides of Milk and fightable almost from the start), or, on a members' account, the Giant Mole if you want a fight that needs nothing more than a spade and a light source. Obor and Bryophyta are the free-to-play key bosses, and Sarachnis is the natural next step up.

Below are the 19 bosses rated 1 or 2 out of 5 in our index: fights whose mechanics you can read on your first or second kill without a video and a practice run.

Three of them need no quest, key, skill level or Wilderness trip at all: Giant Mole, Scurrius and Sarachnis. Everything else needs one of those first.

The shortest path to a first boss kill is a difficulty 1 fight with no unlock, or only a short quest:

What you learn there transfers: prayer against the right attack style, eating before you are low rather than after, and leaving with the loot instead of pushing one more kill. Every fight above difficulty 2 assumes those are automatic.

Do I need expensive gear for these?

No. At difficulty 1 and 2 the fight is losing to your prayer and food usage, not to your weapon. Gear becomes the limiting factor around tier 3.
